What if… one of the reasons Sherlock didn’t run away with Moriarty (besides the whole evil mastermind who mindfucked him and murdered people thing) was because he couldn’t leave Joan behind? Just like how he didn’t take the vicodin, he didn’t want to disappoint Joan again, not after M. After Irene’s betrayal, Joan became the one good meaningful connection in his life - she is his salvation and redemption, the friend he (and plenty of others) never knew he could have and his partner. Even though Joan would never see the world as he does, not like Moriarty, Joan is enough to stay for, Joan is enough for him to say no, over and over, to his all his demons.

And maybe Moriarty knew, in a way, how important Joan is to Sherlock, how ‘untouchable’ she is and that’s why she didn’t have Joan killed as a way to ‘free’ Sherlock from any attachments. Because it would have been the easiest way to break Sherlock completely, to utterly destroy him and make him chase her to the ends of the world, but Moriarty doesn’t want that - she wants him to come willingly, to abandon Joan and his goody-two-shoes life and elope with her. She probably wants to take care of Sherlock the same way Joan did, to erase Joan and become the centre of Sherlock’s world again.

To Irene, Sherlock came apart at her death, and it should have been at her mercy that he be put back together. But it wasn’t. Against all odds and what she wanted to believe, Sherlock fixed himself and got sober again, with thanks to Joan. Sherlock didn’t need Irene anymore, he was moving on, and Moriarty really couldn’t have that could she? So she came back into his life like a whirlwind, faking PTSD and being kidnapped to guilt trip Sherlock into running away with her, away from Joan.

They said in interviews this wasn’t going to be your typical ‘two girls fighting over one guy’ thing, but at a deeper level, it kind of is. It’s about two lonely geniuses that found each other and could have been everything together, if not for the criminal ways of Moriarty. She says she’s the only one that sees as he does, but then that’s true vice versa - she’s finally found someone as unique as her, a work of art to her artist heart. Of course she’d ‘fight’ Joan for Sherlock, how could she ever let him go? But in the end, she would always lose to Joan, has already lost long before she ever came back to Sherlock’s life, because Sherlock never loved Moriarty, even if she loves him.

Ugh.

It’s not presented as “lesbian-cured-by-a-man” on the show. Basically, I think Moffat was going for human sexuality more shades of grey than people assume, where Irene is a lesbian who is in love with Sherlock and Watson is a straight man who is in love with Sherlock and neither of them want to have sex with him but are in love with him. Which does at least sound familiar from my friends’s experiences (I have to resort to friends’s experience because I am gleefully bisexual so it’s not a problem I have.). He might have missed a fair bit in his execution but at no point is Irene turned good by being in love with Sherlock. She never turns good. She’s just not actively bad at the end. Probably in an attempt not to get murdered by Moriarty.

I also totally understand why people are all “but bisexuals exist” but at the same time, how many other representations of bisexuals in the media have us being crazy, kinky and working with the forces of evil. I know full well that if Irene had been bi in the programme, people would have been annoyed by her falling into that stereotype. I start to think people are just looking for a fight.

You’re right in a lot of ways, especially the fluidity of human sexuality (gleefully bisexual, I like that haha!). But in terms of Moffat, I really doubt he had much concern for representing queerness beyond titillating entertainment and queerbaiting. His history speaks for himself. He said asexuality was ‘boring’, that bisexual people were ‘having too much fun’ to bother with wanting to be represented in media - River Song is supposedly bisexual, but we don’t see an ounce of that in the show. Moffat’s repeated offenses against queerness with Oswin Oswald’s ‘I was going through a phase’, Amy Pond flirting with herself, Jenny and Vastra and Canton’s sexuality being played for laughs, Susan the horse who is trans* (and god that was so insulting - not only did the Doctor keep using male pronouns but IT’S A HORSE, that is not trans representation!).

The thing is, Irene did not need to be a lesbian for the episode to work. It was there because the creators wanted to make a point about just how irresistible Sherlock is to people, even managing to make this strong, independent lesbian dominatrix fall in love with him, and then make her powerless to his benevolent mercy. The whole “man turns lesbian straight” is in fact a male fantasy trope that has been abused over and over and over, and is very much not okay.

Her sexuality quite literally had no bearing on the entire show, beyond being a way for her to make mention of her and John’s love for Sherlock that defies their sexuality. And even then, that entire scene was just blatant queerbaiting. We knew John’s devotion to Sherlock, that they love each other deeply in a platonic way (in the canon and show); the show didn’t actually need the creators to acknowledge the fandom’s proclivities to pair them together. If it was a nod to fandom, it was very poorly done. It basically became “Look how gay they are for each other, don’t you feel almost represented, queer people? Just kidding haha they’re not at all a couple nope never they’re never ever ever getting together.”

It’s enough for me to grind my molars to dust.

Sherlock sees puzzles to solve.

Moriarty sees games to play.

But Joan sees people.

And that’s why both Sherlock and Moriarty were so blinded and weakened by each other despite their intellect, while Joan could see and ‘diagnose’ them. They were actually blinded by love. This is why Joan wasn’t afraid and wasn’t angry at Moriarty in the restaurant.

Moriarty had just insulted her about being a mascot, and leaned close to ask if Joan wants to sleep with Sherlock, words designed to infuriate and humiliate; but all Joan could think about is probably “Why is she saying this to me at all? If she’s as smart, or smarter than Sherlock as she claims, then she should know.” I think that’s when it hit Joan. The reason Sherlock couldn’t see Irene as Moriarty was the same reason why Moriarty couldn’t see that Joan has no interest in Sherlock. Moriarty was jealous, and she’s jealous because she’s in love.

But Moriarty was destined to fail, no matter if Sherlock ran away with her or not. Because Sherlock fell in love with Irene Adler, painter and forger extraordinaire, not Moriarty, criminal mastermind. But it was Moriarty that fell in love with Sherlock despite everything. Sherlock was never going to love her again, no matter what she did, however she ‘fixed’ him. Okay I’m having Moriarty/Holmes feels this is really weird.

Guys, Elementary’s Irene Adler was a COMPLETE opposite of BBC’s Irene.

BBC Irene is first presented as this cunning, intelligent, independent and sexy woman who confused Sherlock with her nakedness. She ‘beat’ Sherlock and manipulated the Holmes brothers like a violin, proving herself their equal. But then we find out that all along she’d been with Moriarty as a semi-pawn, and all her planning had actually been Moriarty’s. (Though to give credit where it’s due, she was brilliant, and she knew her strengths and weaknesses enough to get assistance to carry out her plan - but that’s another matter)

None of the ‘amazing-plot-twist’ genius was hers, she only got the information through her ~womanly wiles~ and required Moriarty to tell her what to do with the plans. So unhappy with how that turned out, making her a pawn of Moriarty’s just so Jim could be tied into the episode. Not to mention the very ick lesbian-cured-by-a-man bit, where her love for him betrays her in the most ridiculous way with the worst pun I’d ever heard (SHER-locked indeed, jesus fucking christ). The ending of course, as we all know, is her on her knees in some sandy supposedly Middle Eastern nowhere, about to be beheaded of all things, and Sherlock swooping in to save the damsel. *SEVERE EYE ROLL*

BUT IN ELEMENTARY

Irene is first presented as a victim of Moriarty, a pawn of his that he manipulated to shatter Sherlock and destroy his morale. She has been mentally-fucked with, she is a shell of her former self, she is a woman without agency in this battle between two men. Then in a complete turnaround plot twist, it was Irene’s nakedness that betrayed her and gave Sherlock clarity to her real involvement with Moriarty, and later on, she IS Moriarty. Do you guys realise how subversive and awesome this is?! All of Moriarty’s plans and genius and insidious intellect has been hers all along, and to quote “As if men had a monopoly on murder” (you’re an evil bitch Irene, but goddamn I love you). And in the end she didn’t need rescuing by him, he needed rescuing from her by the lovely and incredibly talented Joan ‘Badass’ Watson.

It was JOAN that saw her weakness and took her down like a ton of bricks because NO ONE calls her a mascot and goddamn gets away with it. Oh and no one fucks with her BFF either. So yes, Elementary’s Irene was also in love with Sherlock, but their love made them weak for each other, almost a stalemate. It took Joan to break that unhealthy relationship and give Sherlock his life, and his focus, back to him.

Then he rightfully acknowledged Joan’s badassery by naming a bee after her. (And I think it’s Euglossa Watsonia. I know Sherlock said “Euglassia” but Euglossa is an actual bee type).

What the fuck do you reply to “because we’re friends” huh? Was Jim supposed to go “Uh, well not really, I’m actually sorta maybe in love with you, but yeah friends, um that’s cool too.”?

Spock, honey, you gotta learn the intricacies of human interaction. A dude who goes against all regulations and puts the life of his entire crew and the ship in jeopardy just so he can fucking pull your ass out of a fucking erupting volcano, does not a mere friend make. A dude that still wants you to be his second in command and the first of his crew, to be his right hand man after you basically stabbed him in the back and got him demoted for saving your life does not a mere friend make. That was some MAJOR BULLSHIT Jim put up with for your sake, Spock, you DAMN WELL should have appreciated it.

Guys, why is there hate for Irene? Yes she’s being presented as a ‘perfect woman’ but that’s Sherlock talking remember? And you know, he’s kinda biased because of that whole love thing? I’m reserving judgement until next week to be honest, because while my gut instinct is to not trust Irene (maybe because Natalie Dormer just has this REALLY intelligent-bordering-on-sly face) I don’t think she’s actually in that house completely willingly.

The whole place is surrounded by a metres-high barbed and spiked fence, the house is very old and dilapidated with a yucky bare mattress and barely any blankets (for all its rustic charms, a Hilton it is not) and there’s a freaking enormous lock on the gate. Not exactly somewhere a cohort of Moriarty’s would be staying, don’t you think?

Irene is probably a prisoner, and she only has those paintings because Moriarty gave them to her so she wouldn’t go loco. Like a really creepy Stockholm Syndrome/solitary confinement thing, and believe me, those things can honestly fuck you up. Although Moriarty probably did plan to kill her but maybe she talked him out of it? Maybe she’s like this secret art forger, which goes back to her criminal origins, and she offered to paint forgeries for Moriarty if he let her live, so she could buy some time and try to escape.

Otherwise, if she had been against him or struggling, I can’t imagine ways of getting pints of blood from her to fake her death without causing her serious injury, and she looks relatively okay to me. (and HOW the hell did they manage to get that much blood from her without having to freeze it? As we’ve seen in BBC Sherlock, frozen blood looks different, and Element!Sherlock would have been able to pick up on it immediately)

Also, please, please, for the love of the Elementary ~~gods~~ writers, please don’t insult Joan by assuming she’s going to attack Irene. Yes, it’s a nice revenge-esque fantasy where you can step into Joan’s shoes and tell Irene off for hurting widdle Sherlock’s feelings but 1) Sherlock is a grown ass man, he can handle his own emotions and drama 2) Joan is far too compassionate and intelligent to simply jump to conclusions and 3) jfc you seriously want a catfight on this show, negating all the positive female representation they’ve had so far?
